Elevating Industries with High Purity Silica Processing, Applications, and Significance
High purity silica starts as low-grade quartz that is mined from open pits or underground mines. The initial processing involves crushing, grinding and washing the quartz rock to remove unwanted materials. Then it undergoes multiple purification and filtration steps to achieve the required level of purity.

Processing of High Purity Silica
High purity silica starts as low-grade quartz that is mined from open pits or underground mines. The initial processing involves crushing, grinding and washing the quartz rock to remove unwanted materials. Then it undergoes multiple purification and filtration steps to achieve the required level of purity.

Some key processing steps are:

- Acid Leaching: Impurities like iron, aluminum and alkali metals are removed by leaching the ground quartz using hydrochloric or sulfuric acid.

- Filtration: The leached quartz slurry is filtered to separate impurities. Multiple filter presses and centrifugal filters are used.

- Drying: Water is removed from the filtered quartz using spray dryers, belt dryers or oven dryers.

- Classification: The dried powder is passed through classifiers to attain the desired particle size distribution.

- Additional Purification: Very high purity silica may require additional purification steps like hydrogen flouride treatment, fusion or sol-gel processing.

- Packaging: The purified high purity silica is packed in various containers depending on end-use and customer requirements.

The level of processing determines the achieved purity which is usually indicated as percentage of silica content (SiO2). High purity grades range from 99.5% to 99.99% SiO2. Ultra high purity or UHP grade exceeds 99.99% purity.

Uses of High Purity Silica
With such a high degree of purity, high purity silica finds wide applications across different industries:

- Chemical Industry: It is used in the manufacturing of silicones, silanes, fumed silica, precipitated silica, etc. These have applications as sealants, coatings, adhesives, elastomers etc.

- Electronics Industry: High Purity Silica and ultra pure grades are preferred as raw material for manufacturing semiconductor devices, solar panels, optics and fiber optics. Its electrical insulation properties are vital.

- Pharmaceutical Industry: High purity silica is approved by FDA for use in manufacture of tablets, granules and capsules as a flowing agent and glidant. It prevents caking.

- Food Industry: As a food additive, it is designated as E551 and used as an anti-caking agent and carrier for food flavors, spices and vitamin preparations.

- Personal Care Products: Finely ground high purity silica is used as a thickening agent in toothpastes and an exfoliating agent in facial/body scrubs.

- Others: It also finds application as a reinforcing filler in tires, brake pads and hoses owing to its hardness and heat resistance. Specialty glass and fiberglass also use it.

Importance of High Purity Silica
With such wide applications across critical industries, high purity silica has become an indispensable industrial raw material globally. Some key points that highlight its importance are:

- Semiconductor-grade purity is required for cutting-edge technologies like VLSI chips manufacturing. Even minor impurities can cause device failure.

- Pharmaceutical applications demand the highest purity ensured by stringent regulatory standards. Impurities can compromise drug efficacy and safety.

- Optical-grade purity transmits maximum light for applications like camera lenses, scopes, binoculars etc without any distortion, glare or halo effects.

- Food-grade purity assures no harmful elements are leached into food and are completely safe for consumption as per global food codes.

- Performance advantages in fillers, coatings and sealants rely on the reinforcement, protection and durability imparted by high purity silica additives.

- Reliability of products across industries validates the importance of a stable and consistent supply of high purity silica from trusted suppliers with robust production facilities
