Biopolymers Possess Excellent Biodegradability

Proteins, derived from sources like soy, corn, and wheat, possess inherent biodegradability and biocompatibility. Proteins can be processed to form films, coatings, and fibers with excellent mechanical properties. These materials find applications in food packaging, tissue engineering, and drug delivery systems, among others. Polyesters, such as polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), are among the most commonly used biopolymers. PLA, derived from fermented plant sugars, exhibits similar characteristics to conventional plastics but with the added benefit of being compostable. PHA, produced by microorganisms from renewable carbon sources, offers a wide range of properties and can be tailored to specific applications.

Unlike conventional plastics, which persist in the environment, biopolymers can undergo microbial degradation, breaking down into natural elements like water, carbon dioxide, and biomass.
