Polyacrylamide is made up of acrylamide monomer and is water-soluble. It increases the viscosity of water and facilitates the flocculation of particles present in water.

Polyacrylamide in Enhanced Oil Recovery: A Promising Approach

Polyacrylamide (PAM) has emerged as a promising approach in the field of Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), offering potential benefits for improved oil production from reservoirs. In EOR, PAM is injected into oil reservoirs to increase the viscosity of injected water, effectively reducing the mobility of oil and improving its displacement from porous rocks. The high molecular weight and long-chain structure of PAM make it an ideal candidate for EOR applications. When injected into the reservoir, PAM molecules interact with water molecules, leading to increased water viscosity. This viscosity alteration helps to create a more favorable flow profile, enabling the water to sweep through the reservoir more efficiently and push trapped oil towards production wells. Moreover, PAM's ability to adsorb onto reservoir rock surfaces enhances its effectiveness in EOR.

The adsorbed Polyacrylamide molecules act as a barrier, reducing the permeability of rock pores and preventing the premature breakthrough of injected water, thereby improving the sweep efficiency and overall oil recovery. Furthermore, PAM can exhibit shear-thinning behavior, meaning its viscosity decreases under shear stress. This property allows for easier injection of PAM solutions into reservoirs and ensures better fluid mobility. Overall, PAM's viscosity-increasing properties, adsorption capability, and shear-thinning behavior make it a promising approach for enhanced oil recovery. Continued research and development in the field of PAM-based EOR techniques are expected to further optimize its performance, leading to increased oil production and improved energy efficiency in the petroleum industry.
