UK government plans to set separate recycling category for vapes

The UKVIA has released some details of an investigation. They completed a comprehensive investigation into the provision and use of vape processing facilities across the UK. The survey shows that there is a lack of vape waste disposal facilities in public facilities. Although the vape industry is suffering from environmental pressure.

Investigation in 10 major provinces and cities.

During the investigation, UKVIA sent free information requests to 10 major provinces and cities. These include Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff, Glasgow, and Westminster, and 10 central London councils.

The results show that only 60% of responding agencies stated that they provide vape waste disposal services at citizen convenience stations or designated collection facilities. And, only 10% of agencies have set up vape waste recycling bins in public places. Besides, about a third of the institutions even responded in the negative. They state that they never provide any kind of vape waste disposal containers or drop-off points.

Also, the survey shows that so far, only 1 municipal government has introduced street or home vape collection services. 80% of municipalities are not considering investing in new vape collection solutions in next year's budget. Even before hearing about the ban on disposable vapes.

There needs more work.

In this regard, John Dunne, Director General of the UKVIA said:

"Advocating a ban on disposable vapes on environmental grounds while not committing any investment to vape waste collection. Despite the need for such facilities in public places – which are controlled by local government – is a case of the pot calling the kettle black."

Four days ago, the government conducted a consultation on proposing to increase the collection level of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, meaning waste electrical and electronic equipment). Also, it includes implementing a separate category for vapes. The deadline for submitting opinions had just passed. And, the results of the survey were released. aroused great public concern.

The association said it recognized the need for industry to demonstrate the highest level of environmental responsibility. But it also insists local governments played a vital role in providing necessary facilities for public spaces.

Dunn said:

"The UKVIA is also involved in the development of a vape licensing scheme which has just presented to parliamentarians. And, if adopted, will require retailers to provide take-back facilities in-store before being allowed to sell vapes."
