Charter schools often spark debate, but much of the conversation is built on myths. Are they really better than public schools? Do they get more funding? Do they only take the “best” students?
The truth is more complicated. Charter schools are publicly funded but independently run. Some do well, some perform about the same as public schools, and others fall short. Oversight and leadership make a big difference.
Parents and policy makers should remember: access is limited, oversight varies, and specialization can be a strength. But the best school depends on the child, not just the label “charter” or “public.”
