How is aerobic exercise different from anaerobic exercise?

When we commit to real, useful exercise, we learn what our bodies are capable of. Learning more about ourselves and what our bodies need motivates us to get fit. Every time you lift weights, you get to know your muscles better, and they strengthen. Every time you run a lap around the track, you learn more about how far you can push yourself to keep going. When you think about it, exercise is a way to learn more about yourself. So, the more we learn about our bodies, like what our muscles need and how to train them best, the more we learn about what we can do. You can get much more out of your exercise routine if you know what you're doing at the gym. So, when you understand what aerobic and anaerobic exercises are and how they vary, you can maximize your fitness program. Find out more about how aerobic and anaerobic exercise can help you and how you can boost your health.

What is aerobic exercise?

No matter how fit you are, you've likely heard of the word "aerobic." But just what is it? Aerobic workouts are types of exercise whose main goal is to strengthen the heart and lungs. Aerobic means literally "with oxygen." When we breathe, we bring oxygen into our bodies, which our muscles need to move and work. So the main thing that workouts do for the body is to build a stronger heart through long, hard breathing exercises.

What are some examples of aerobic exercises?

Think of any workout that needs a constant, steady effort. There are two types of physical exercise: those that are low-impact and those that are high-impact. They make a distinction between the different stages of how hard the workout is. Low-impact exercises can be less intense and only sometimes require a little energy. Low-impact exercises include things like walking, riding, swimming, and rowing. You can always do these things at a very high level, but you don't have to.

The more intense type of aerobics is called "high impact." It includes running, racing, skipping rope, and jumping jacks. These are active tasks that can be done over a long period.

What is training without oxygen?

Aerobic exercise is good for our hearts and lungs, but what about anaerobic exercises? Aerobic means "with oxygen," while anaerobic means "without oxygen." Unlike aerobic exercise, which involves staying active for a long time, anaerobic activity involves doing shorter but more intense exercises. Anaerobic workouts don't use oxygen. Instead, they get their energy from glucose and other short-term sources.

What Kinds of Exercise Are Anaerobic?

Anaerobic workouts are fast, high-intensity workouts that use energy from sources other than oxygen. Aerobic and anaerobic exercises can sometimes be done at the same time. But most anaerobic activities, like weight lifting, strength training, and other intense activities, don't use oxygen. Things like bench presses, dumbbell workouts, and strength training come to mind. There are also workouts called calisthenics, which use your body weight as support. Push-ups, sit-ups, and even yoga are examples of calisthencs that can be done as anaerobic exercise. Then, there's high-intensity interval training or HIIT. These are usually cardio workouts, but they are done so quickly and hard that your body treats them as anaerobic.

What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic exercise?

The only real difference between these two types of exercise is how your body gets its energy while doing them.

Breathing and air are the most important parts of aerobic activity. In anaerobic, your body gets its energy from sugars, carbs, fats, and protein that it has saved. But the most important thing is what you want to get out of it. The CDC says a good weekly exercise plan should include cardio and anaerobic activities. So, the difference in your fitness goals rests on what you want to get out of exercise. Anaerobic power training is a way to build muscle. Your blood pressure will go down if you take a quick walk. Your fitness is a way to find out what you're capable of. You can become the person you know you can be by doing aerobic and anaerobic workouts safely and effectively.
